Police say it appears a vehicle ran a stop sign on Whelpton St. and struck the van on Drouillard Rd. Tuesday evening.
Two people were trapped inside the van before firefighters were able to get them out.
They were taken to hospital with minor injuries.
Charges are pending.
SPS Board Chair Kelly Ash said the decision followed discussions with Acting Chief Mike Federico and aligns with practices at other police services.
