County Backs Unifor TPP Stance

County councillors are backing a Unifor resolution making demands of any final Trans Pacific Partnership trade deal being negotiated federally.

Unifor Local 200 President Chris Taylor says the union isn't entirely against free trade, but isn't happy with the TPP.

"The reality is fair trade works, reciprocal trade works. Unjust trade as what is being contemplated under the TPP, does not," says Taylor.

One of the main concerns with the TPP according to Taylor is a reported drop in the requirement for regional content to be included in products from 60% down to 30% for parts and from 62.5% down to 45% for finished vehicles.

"If Mexico is stating that it's going to decimate their parts industry, you can imagine what it'll do to ours at the living wages we provide," says Taylor.

The resolution includes pressing the federal government to require of the TPP automotive protections at least as strong as what is outlined in the North American Free Trade Agreement.
