Plenty Of Hard Work Ahead

Former Windsor-Tecumseh MP Joe Comartin is happy to see an NDP sweep in Essex County, but admits it won't be easy going up against a Liberal majority government.

He reflects back on the year 2000, when he was the only NDP Member of Parliament in Ontario, saying it's going to take a lot of work to give this region, and the NDP, a voice in Ottawa.

"When Brian (Masse) got elected in that (Windsor West) by-election a couple years later, we basically had to split the province. But we were able to carry the load much better when there were two of us," he explains. "So now that we have three (MPs) from this area, it'll be that much easier for all three of them."

Comartin says Tracey Ramsey, Brian Masse and Cheryl Hardcastle are going to need to carry two or three portfolios and simply outwork other members of parliament.

He adds that after garnering just 44 seats in the House of Commons, the New Democratic Party of Canada has "a tremendous amount of rebuilding to do."
