The Hut Hits Major Milestone

The Royal Canadian Legion's Branch 12 in Walkerville is celebrating its 90th anniversary.

Chairman Bill Smith says the branch, nicknamed "The Hut," has never been at risk of closing, but it's certainly endured hardships in recent decades.

"It's a sign of the times," he explains. "The veterans are passing on, and trying to get new members into the Legion is a chore. We struggle."

In order to attract new members and keep the legion viable for another 90 years, Smith says rules are being changed to attract new members.

Anyone can join the Legion now, as long as they show a committment to serving the community.

Smith believes younger generations still view the Legion as somewhat of an "old boys club," and it's that image Legionnaires are working to change.
