New MPs Excited As Parliament Opens

"It's ree-alll," sings Cheryl Hardcastle emerging for a brief interview with BlackburnNews.com during an orientation session on Parliament Hill.

The new Windsor-Tecumseh MP and fellow rookie NDP MP Tracey Ramsey prepared earlier this week with a session on procedural rules in the House of Commons.

Hardcastle says there's a lot to learn.

"When you're sitting in the House of Commons, it's an honour and a privilege to be representing everyone, but in order to represent your people, you have to do it right," she says.

Hardcastle will have a chance to introduce her first private member's bill in this session, but she's not sure what issue she wants to tackle first.

"I do have sports and disabilities as my critic portfolio. I do have a lot of interests in my riding. So, I don't know," she says. "We do have a caucus meeting, and that's going to help us to make sure we have all areas covered."

The Throne Speech is Friday. MPs will sit for a week before the start of Christmas break, and Parliament is expected to resume at the end of January.
