County Approves New Ambulances

Essex-Windsor EMS has county council's blessing to buy eight new ambulances in 2016.

Essex County Council voted unanimously, but Tecumseh Mayor Gary McNamara had some initial misgivings. He wishes the vehicles were diesel instead of gas-powered.

"My biggest concern is gasoline fluctuates on a daily basis; diesel is more bi-monthly or monthly. There seems to be more stability."

EMS Chief Bruce Krauter managed to convince him saying the price of each vehicle will be slightly lower. The county also realizes savings on fuel by buying gasoline in bulk.

The new ambulances will cost $1.2-million, but McNamara says the money's already in the budget.

"We have a life-cycling fund, and basically fleet is part of that life-cycling," he says. "It's not as if we have to go find the dollars. The dollars are there."

The vehicles will replace aging ambulances in the fleet.
