Layoffs At Hotel-Dieu Grace Healthcare

After what he calls weeks of careful deliberation, the vice president of external affairs at Hotel-Dieu Grace Healthcare says eight non-union workers have been let go.

Bill Marra says it's the result of the hospital's shift in focus two years ago.

"These decisions were made really to ensure that as we go forward we have the right skill set and the right structure in place to accommodate the direction of the hospital," he says. "The reality is that once the hospitals realigned services a little over two years ago, Hotel-Dieu Grace Healthcare became an exclusively post-acute care hospital."

Marra won't say what the positions are, but says they aren't front-line workers, and the cuts won't affect patient care. He also says they aren't the result of the hospital's deficit.

"These decisions were not, in any way driven by finances."

Hospital officials expect an update on their deficit at a meeting later this month, and Marra believes it'll come in lower than the projected $5.3-million.
