A 54-year-old man is in jail after a DNA hit helped to solve a 25-year-old sexual assault investigation.
In September of 1990, Windsor police investigated a break and enter and sexual assault on Marentette Ave. just north of Tecumseh Rd. Forensic evidence was seized but provided little assistance at the time.
In July 2015 officers reexamined the case and submitted evidence for analysis in light of present day technology.
On January 27, 2016 the Centre of Forensic Sciences contacted Windsor police and indicated DNA from the National Offender Databank matched evidence submitted from the case. A Canada Wide Warrant was issued and the suspect was arrested in Burnaby, British Columbia. He was brought back to Windsor on February 4, 2016.
The man is charged with sexual assault with a weapon, break and enter, unlawful confinement, intent to commit an indictable offence, having face disguised and uttering threats.
Police are continuing their investigation and looking into other incidents that occurred in 1990 between June and September.
