ERCA Issues Flood Watch

The Essex Region Conservation Authority is warning residents living along the shores of Lake Erie in Leamington and Wheatley, and Lake St.Clair about the potential for flooding.

A flood watch has been issued for those areas, as well as for the properties along the western portion of the Town of Tecumseh and the City of Windsor.

The conservation authority says the ground is still semi-frozen and with current forecasts calling for rain and wet snow over the next 12 hours, low-lying areas and floodplains are susceptible.

There's also the risk of ice jamming near the region's bridge and culverts.

The wind won't help either. Forecasts are calling for winds of 30-30 km/hr out of the east-northeast with gusts of up to 50 km/hr, heightening the risk along Lake Erie and on the east and north sides of Pelee Island.

Flowing and standing water can be extremely hazardous, and the conservation authority says people, pets and livestock should be kept away from the water. Catch basins and other surface water inlets should be free of debris.
