Homeless Coalition Conducting Survey Of Homeless

Volunteers are needed to help take a census of Windsor's homeless population.

The Homeless Coalition of Windsor and Essex County has signed on to a national initiative called the "20,000 Homes Campaign." Organizations in cities across the country are working to place 20,000 of the most vulnerable in housing by July 1, 2018.

Community development officer at the coalition, Angela Yakonich says there are no statistics showing how many people are homeless in Windsor. While there are numbers for how many use shelters, there's no accounting so far of how many couch-surf or sleep outside.

"From there, we would take all that information and give it to our Housing First program, and they will do that assessment," says Yakonich. "We'll work to get some of these people housed as well as wrap supports and services around them that they may need."

So far, she says 75 people have signed up to help conduct the survey on April 19 and 20, but up to 200 are needed.

Yakonich says the best way to get involved is to call the 311 Call Centre.
