Leamington Approves New Mass Notification System

The Municipality of Leamington is bringing in a new mass notification system to use in the event of another tornado or flood.

The municipality used to use reverse 911, but Fire Chief Chuck Parsons says the town stopped using it a few years ago.

"It was good in its time, but it's antiquated now," he says.

Parsons says the system can call residents and give them vital information if there's an emergency, but residents will have to opt in.

"Our initial numbers will be coming from water billing," says Parsons. "After that they can also opt in to give us other numbers, or if there are rentals they can give us information, as well."

He says there will be a public awareness campaign soon.

Tecumseh has also voted to implement the system, and Parsons says other municipalities in Essex County are considering it.
