Bed Bug Outbreak Prompts Action At City Libraries

The Windsor Public Library wants you to know it doesn't have bed bugs, and it's taking precautions to avoid getting them from libraries in the county.

The Essex Public Library announced it was shutting down 14 branches after the critters were found at least one branch, the one in Leamington. It shares materials with the Windsor Public Library, but CEO Kitty Pope says they've suspended the sharing until the outbreak is under control.

Libraries in the city suffered an outbreak of its own at the Central branch a few years ago, and Pope says getting rid of them can take time.

"We have exterminators in all of our facilities on a regular basis," she says. "It took about two, two-and-a-half weeks for us to get a complete clear sign, so for those small libraries, I assume they should be able to get it under control within a few days."

She stresses an outbreak can happen at any public facility, and believes libraries in the county will likely reopen in a few days.
