UPDATE: Smoke Alarms Save Five In LaSalle (GALLERY)

Smoke detectors are being credited for saving the lives of five people in LaSalle before fire destroyed their home.

Once they heard the beeping, fire officials say everyone rushed outside and saw flames on the exterior of the home.

Firefighters quickly responded at around 7am Wednesday to Short Malden Rd. along the Canard River.

Deputy Fire Chief Ed Thiessen says there were no injuries.

"It was going up the wall and in the attic. By the time we got here it was a fully involved structure fire," he says. "Everybody was accounted for."

The main and upper floor were occupied by one family while a mother and son live in the basement unit, Thiessen says.

Even the family dog and cat made it out unscathed.

The cause is still under investigation, but damage is pegged at more than $200,000.

LaSalle fire officials say this incident reinforces the need for everyone to have working smoke alarms.
