Officer Hospitalized After Cruiser Struck

An officer with the Windsor Police Service is in hospital after a transport truck smashed into the back of a police cruiser making a traffic stop along Hwy. 401 near Howard Ave. in Windsor.

The officer's injuries aren't expected to be fatal.

OPP officers reported to the crash, happening around 12:30pm on Friday.

"Making a traffic or emergency stop on the shoulder of a busy highway or road sets a dangerous stage for police officers and our road safety partners, due to the risk of being struck, injured or killed by approaching vehicles whose drivers are not paying full attention," says Brad Blair, OPP deputy commissioner, in a news release. "We are counting on all drivers to help ensure the safety of everyone by slowing down and, on multi-lane highways, safely moving over.”

A 53-year-old driver from Detroit is charged with failing to move over for an emergency vehicle.
