A Hot, Wet August

Despite torrential rains and two tornadoes, the region didn't break any records, but it's been the hottest and wettest August in years.

Environment Canada says Windsor-Essex and Chatham-Kent had 106.8 mm of rain in August, compared to the long-term average of 72.6 mm.

"When we did get rain, it tended to fall pretty heavily on a small number of days," says meteorologist Geoff Coulson. "What's interesting to note is that about a third of that fell on just one day, August 16."

The record for rainfall belongs to August 2014.

Coulson hedges when asked if the rainfall will make up for the drought that plagued farmers earlier this summer. He says it might.

August was also warmer than usual.

"[It] came in with an average temperature of 23.7C (74.6F)," says Coulson. The long-term average is 22C (72F). "It was, in fact, the warmest August since 2010."
