First Human West Nile Case Detected

The first human case of West Nile virus has been detected in the region.

The Windsor-Essex County Health Unit says a Windsor-Essex County resident tested positive after experiencing symptoms.

Most people with West Nile Virus never develop symptoms and will not know they have the virus. Approximately 25% of people develop the West Nile fever while less than 1% develop a severe neuro-invasive disease.

The health unit will continue to monitor West Nile Virus activity in the region for a few more weeks. Since May 25, 2016 eight mosquito pools have tested positive for the virus.

Sarnia police said the investigation began on May 29 after the victim was allegedly attacked by acquaintances at a residence near Tashmoo Avenue and Christopher Drive at Aamjiwnaang First Nation.
