Adding More Art To The Neighbourhood

Students at Westview Freedom Academy in Windsor are celebrating their diversity today by unveiling a new outdoor mural, featuring the school's new Falcon mascot.

"The position of the falcon is, not necessarily 'attack,' but a moment of sureness and confidence. We wanted its arms out-stretched and facing everyone," says art teacher Emily Carruthers.

She adds that there are 72 countries represented in the student body at Westview, so they made sure the background was covered in all sorts of bright colours.

The project involved students from Grades 9-to-12, and took three weeks to finish. It was funded by the United Way, the public school board and the Windsor Police Service.

Westview students painted a mural on the side of a building along Tecumseh Rd. W at Askin Ave. last year, and Carruthers hopes this is a tradition that continues.
