Brush Addresses Kaake's Family In Court

At the close of his sentencing hearing, Matthew Brush addressed the family of Cassandra Kaake in the courtroom and asked them not to hate him.

Brush told the family he is not asking for forgiveness but doesn't want the family to hate him because hate "festers and rots and causes pain and anguish." He said he will feel the sorrow, shame, remorse, and self loathing every day of his life.

Brush pled guilty to second degree murder in the December 11, 2014 brutal killing of Kaake. At the time of her death, Kaake was seven months pregnant.

Brush told the court his remorse increases when he thinks of the unborn child and the life she never got to live.

The details of the case and the murder itself were presented by the Crown throughout the sentencing hearing, which began on January 23.

Both the crown and defense have completed submissions in the case. The crown is looking for life in prison without the possibility of parole for 23-25 years, while the defence is looking for the possibility of parole after 20 years. The judge will make his decision on Monday at 2pm.
