Library Workers Ratify Agreement

After 230 days on strike Essex County library workers have ratified an agreement with a 70% vote.

Workers were on the picket line through the hot days of summer into the bitter winter over a sick-time policy Essex County management was trying to implement.

CUPE 2974 Chair Lori Wightman says she is relieved the strike is over but no one wins here.

"Neither side is going to get the outcome that they wanted completely, so it's a little sad that we didn't get the outcome that I think our members deserved but it's the best deal that we could get," says Wightman.

The details of agreement will not be released until after the Essex County Library Board vote on the agreement. That vote is expected to take place Friday. If the vote is positive, Essex County libraries could open sometime next week.
