Tecumseh town councillors are waiting for a report from its administration before it signs off on a bylaw governing the use of shipping containers in neighbourhoods.
Shipping containers are commonly used in industrial areas and on farms for storage. Over the past year, the town has allowed them in one neighbourhood too, on a trial basis, but councillor Andrew Dowie says based on community feedback, the administration does not recommend them in residential areas.
"It would be too much of a disruption, kind of the look of the town -- and it would not be compatible," councillor Andrew Dowie explains.
You may have seen the containers used to make small homes online, and Dowie hopes the upcoming report addresses that too.
"If someone has a really neat concept, they could come and ask for permission," he says. "What Windsor has done is they have said it's not a shipping container if it's a residence. It's got a different function, entirely."
As for the home in Tecumseh at the centre of the debate, he says the owners won't be forced to get rid of it, not right away anyway.
"It has existing approval. It is time limited," says Dowie.
Farmers use storage containers, but he does not believe they cause the same disruption as they do in urban residential areas.
