Construction is well underway at the Optimist Community Centre on Ypres Ave. in Windsor, where a new $2.5-million library branch is being built.
Mayor Drew Dilkens says it's part of $8-million the City of Windsor is spending on libraries this year.
"Certainly Optimist [Public Library] is a big piece of that puzzle," he states. "The expansion of Budimir Public Library, which is a very well-used branch of the public library system, is equally as important. And then the preservation of the old fire hall in Sandwich [Town], the John Muir Library."
Library Board Chair Peter Frise adds that the design of the new Optimist building is unique in that it'll be made to look like a car garage. That's because it will be home to Windsor's automotive archives.
"Our automotive archives will have nearly 5,000 items in it, including some original design sketches dating back to the 1930s" says Frise. "As well as a huge collection of shop manuals and dealer brochures and things like that."
The new Optimist Public Library is expected to open this fall.
