Changes could be coming at Fiat Chrysler Automobiles in Windsor, but Unifor Local 444 doesn't believe it will result in job losses.
The company has put out a request for proposals to see if there's any interest from the business world in running different divisions of its transportation group.
"I don't see them going to a specific company to be able to do all of that work," says Unifor Local 444 President Dino Chiodo. "I think it's just too big of a situation. I think that could be done in pieces, but I don't know how easily that's going to happen."
Chiodo explains that his team has 30 days to put a business case together and present it to FCA. In that, they will analyze any businesses that have submitted RFPs, how many jobs a change could affect and if it makes sense.
Chiodo says this isn't the first time Fiat Chrysler has looked at outsourcing, and although he's optimistic that nothing will come of it once again, the union boss admits the situation is aggravating.
"We just went through bargaining six months ago," he says. "There could have been more discussion with reference to, this is the course of action they were going to take or direction they were going to move in."
The RFP process could last for up to six months, and Unifor expects it to be a long and tedious process.
