Lakeshore Passes ATV Bylaw For Stoney Point

After a two-year pilot project, the Town of Lakeshore is implementing a permanent bylaw for ATV use in the Stoney Point/Lighthouse Cove area.

The bylaw will allow off-road vehicles on the area defined by the pilot project during the winter months for ice fishing and recreational use.

"They successfully managed their program. We didn't have one incident, so we've now made it a permanent bylaw, and moving forward we're going to look into other areas in the municipality that may benefit from a similar bylaw," says Councillor Linda McKinlay.

McKinlay says moving into other portions of the municipality may require cooperation with the County of Essex.

"We will now begin a process to work with Essex County and see if we can expand this program into other areas, and for other reasons," says McKinlay.

ATV or off-road vehicles will be allowed on roads defined by the pilot program; mainly roads in the eastern end of the municipality with access to Lake St. Clair. They will be allowed during ice fishing season only which runs from December until the beginning of April.
