Clock Tower Approved For Windsor's Erie St.

Riders in this year's Via Italia bike races along Erie St. E in Windsor will pass by a new clock tower dedicated to a long-time family doctor.

Dr. Lazarus Jovanovic worked in the community for 50 years, often working late into the night to help patients during house calls or in his office. In addition to his contributions to the local medical profession, Jovanovic was also an advocate for the city's Italian community.

Erie Street Business Improvement Association Vice-President Teresa Silvestri says it will be hard to miss.

"It is 33'. It is going to be huge, but it's beautiful," she says. "The finish is like, limestone, so it's going to last for hundreds of years."

Initially, the cost of the project was estimated at $75,000, but with the help of a sponsor, the bill has been lowered to between $35- and $50,000. Businesses along Erie St. are footing the bill.

The limestone clock tower will be placed in the middle of the roundabout at Erie St. E and Parent Ave. and should be erected in time for the Via Italia bike races in September.
