Thomas Canning In Receivership

The lawyer representing nine farmers involved in a $2.85-million lawsuit against Thomas Canning in Maidstone confirms the company is in receivership.

"That's what I have received notice of," says Jeffrey J. Hewitt, adding that the legal proceeding has been stayed.

The farmers launched their lawsuit last year alleging the company had reneged on contracts leaving the bulk of their tomato harvest rotting in the fields.

In 2014, Thomas Canning received $3-million in provincial grants.

The company also faces legal troubles for allegedly mislabelling its products.

BlackburnNews.com has contacted Thomas Canning's office on South Talbot Rd. and the court-appointed receiver for comment.
