Two People Dead After Vehicle Strikes C02 Tank In Leamington

The OPP says two people are dead after a vehicle struck a carbon dioxide tank in Leamington.

On Sunday at around 12:15am, the OPP, Leamington Fire Services and Essex Windsor EMS responded to a motor vehicle collision in the 1100 block of Mersea Rd. 5 in Leamington.

Police say a vehicle struck a cement barrier, rupturing a large carbon dioxide tank on a greenhouse property, which resulted in an explosion and fire.

The two people in the vehicle were both pronounced dead at the scene.

Mersea Rd. 5 was closed between Hwy. 77 and Mersea Rd. 12 for approximately six hours while the OPP investigated but has since been reopened.

Police say the CO2 leak has been contained and there is no concern for public safety.

Names of the victims are being withheld until next of kin are notified.

The investigation is ongoing.
