As boarded up homes on Indian Rd. come down, the City of Windsor is continuing negotiations with the Ambassador Bridge Company.
Windsor Mayor Drew Dilkens says the city had to issue permits for demolition as part of the federal government permit, but there are still many other issues to work out.
"There is still a negotiation that has to happen. That negotiation I think will help set some of the parameters on how things move forward. I think at the end of the day our goal is to make sure that the city's interests are protected and we're really looking after those in Sandwich Town," says Dilkens.
The city has committed to creating a website dedicated to keeping neighbourhood residents apprised of what it going on in the process of building a new bridge.
The bridge company has already been granted a demolition permit for one home on Indian Rd. and another 32 should be issued within the next week as Union Gas and Enwin shut-off services to the properties.
Dilkens says the bridge company has agreed to demolish one house at a time to help mitigate some of the effects on the neighbourhood.
"They're working with our city forester with respect to saving trees and they are working on dust mitigation, and plans to make sure that the impacts to the neighbourhood as they tear down these homes are minimal," says Dilkens.
Wyandotte St. W between Huron Church and Indian Rd. will be closed until October 31, 2017 as work is done on the Ambassador Bridge property.
