Windsor-Detroit Tunnel Shuts Down Friday Night

If you are crossing the border, keep in mind the Windsor-Detroit Tunnel is closing at 8pm Friday night.

The tunnel will be closed for nine days, reopening at 5:30am Monday, October 30.

There will be a number of nightly closures after that for most of the rest of the year.

Between October 30 and November 22, the tunnel will be closed every night between 8pm to 5:30am. It shuts down again every night between November 27 and December 23, and from January 2 to the middle of June 2018.

When the tunnel is closed, cross-border traffic will have to use the Ambassador Bridge. The Canada Border Services Agency says it is prepared for the increase in traffic.

A new ceiling will be built in the section of the tunnel under the Detroit River. The ceiling is 85 years sold and is showing signs of wear and tear because of vibrations from heavy trucks, moisture, road salt and exhaust. Typically, the lifespan of a ceiling slab in tunnel construction is 75 years.
