Windsor Soldiers To Be Honoured After Saving Woman From Fiery Crash

Two Windsor soldiers will receive a Medal of Bravery for pulling a woman from a fiery crash back in August 2015.

The Governor General will recognize Corporal Matthew Lepain and Master Corporal Alexander Zawyrucha Thursday at Rideau Hall in Ottawa.

The two steadied the vehicle which had started rolling backward. Inside, a woman was trapped; entangled in her seat belt.

As a pool of gasoline spread beneath their feet, Zawyrucha reached in to help the woman, while Lepain noticed a fire had started under the hood of the car. Just as the vehicle became engulfed in flames, the two pulled the woman to safety.

The two men are both reservists with the Windsor Regiment.  Lepain joined in August 2014, while Zawyrucha has been with the regiment since September 2011.
