Impaired Driving Charges Up In Latest R.I.D.E. Stats

The Ontario Provincial Police in Essex County says the number of drivers charged during its RIDE campaign has increased 29% over last year.

The OPP have released the statistics Wednesday from their festive RIDE program which wrapped up January 8.

The charges were for impaired driving or failing to provide a breath sample.

It says 18 drivers were charged during the campaign this year, compared to 14 last year. More drivers were checked at the roadside. The number of vehicles stopped rose 381%, from 21 during the 2016/2017 event to 80 in the most recent program.

The number suspensions issued because drivers were in the warning range fell 23% from 27 last year to 22.

Sarnia police said the investigation began on May 29 after the victim was allegedly attacked by acquaintances at a residence near Tashmoo Avenue and Christopher Drive at Aamjiwnaang First Nation.
