Hospital Postpones Surgeries

Windsor Regional Hospital has postponed ten outpatient surgeries due to overcapacity.

The hospital is seeing a surge of flu-related cases which has resulted in being five patients without beds at both campuses. The Met campus is currently operating at 113% capacity while the Ouellette campus is at 106% capacity.

CEO David Musyj says the increase of beds in December has helped but they still need to be more proactive.

"They were very proactive this year in making the beds available, now what we have to do is be proactive with respect to approving those, once you say you're going to have the beds to actually say yes you can put them in place," says Musyj.

He says they also need additional funding for extra staff during surges like this.

Musyj says they continue to deal with long wait times in the emergency department. People with flu symptoms who are otherwise healthy will face wait times of eight to nine hours.
