Production at Chrysler's Windsor Assembly plant may be affected by a potential walkout.
Members of Unifor Local 444 voted Sunday overwhelmingly to authorise strike action at the four parts facilities supplying the plant. The vote was held Sunday morning at their union hall, and the results were confirmed by their Twitter account and Facebook page.
Contract negotiations have been ongoing between Unifor and the suppliers, which are HBPO Canada, Avencez Assembly, ZF Friedrichshafen and Dakkota Integrated Systems. Strike action was unanimous among HBPO and Avencez employees who voted, 98.3% for ZF and 98% for Dakkota.
All four plants almost exclusively supply the plant with parts.
“In order to move the needle forward our membership recognised the importance of coming out today, even under horrible weather conditions, to send a strong, unified message to the employers that it is time to bargain a good and fair contract,” said Unifor 444 president James Stewart.
Contracts for all four plants are due to expire March 4, though it was not immediately clear when any strike action may take place.
Wages and benefits are among the sticking points.
