There's been an enormous order for the Windsor-built Chrysler Pacifica.
Fiat-Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) has announced an expansion of its partnership with the self-driving vehicle company Waymo. FCA is selling Waymo 62,000 additional Pacifica hybrid models.
The additional order placed by Waymo is the continuation of a commitment made in January, to help launch Waymo's driverless ride-hailing service, according to a release put out Thursday by the automaker.
"FCA is committed to bringing self-driving technology to our customers in a manner that is safe, efficient and realistic," says FCA CEO Sergio Marchionne in the release. "Strategic partnerships, such as the one we have with Waymo, will help to drive innovative technology to the forefront."
The order is the latest piece of good news for Chrysler and the Windsor Assembly plant, where the Pacifica is built. Sales of the minivan are already on pace to surpass 2017's figures. Through April 30, over 42,000 Pacificas have been sold in 2018.
Waymo, based in Mountain View, California, has been the pioneer in the self-driving auto industry, producing a fleet of fully autonomous vehicles on public roads. The company plans to launch its self-driving service later this year, in which people can use an app to request a ride.
"Waymo's goal from day one has been to build the world's most experienced driver and give people access to self-driving technology that will make our roads safer," says Waymo CEO John Krafcik in the release. "We're excited to deepen our relationship with FCA that will support the launch of our driverless service, and explore future products that support Waymo's mission."
FCA has already delivered 600 Pacificas to Waymo.
