History buffs will soon be able to explore a historical Windsor area interactively.
The city of Windsor has submitted a report concerning an updated walking tour for Walkerville.
The report was discussed and accepted by City Council's planning, heritage and economic development committee at its meeting this week. It now heads to the full City Council.
The cost to the city is about $3,800, according to the report.
The tour would be a mobile-friendly overview of the Walkerville neighbourhood, according to the report from the city's acting heritage planner, Kristina Tang. It would be accessible through the internet with digital formats available through computer, tablet and cell phone. There will also be a printable version available.
The excursion will feature over 40 points of interest, and walkers will have the option to go by a map of the tour points, or the descriptions of each site.
The tour helps support the heritage conservation policy in Windsor's official plan by cultivating awareness and appreciation of the city's vibrant and colourful history, as well as promote public understanding and enjoyment.
The Walkerville neighbourhood began as its own municipality, founded by American liquor baron Hiram Walker and surrounding the distillery that still dominates the district. The area was annexed to the city of Windsor in 1935. Today the area is a thriving mix of bars, restaurants, historic townhouses and businesses.
The Walkerville Business Improvement Association will soon introduce the tour to their shareholders as a tool to promote tourism, and a launch date is set for sometime this summer.
