Man Charged In Backyard Camp Fire Death

Windsor police say an 18-year-old man is charged with criminal negligence causing death after another man died of severe burns suffered at a backyard campfire.

Police say the two were at a neighbourhood gathering on Saturday, June 16 on Dynasty St. in the area of Howard Ave. and Dougall Pkwy.

The group was lighting a chiminea, but it would not stay lit, so a man poured gasoline on it.

There was a burst of flame, and a 20-year-old man suffered severe burns to a large portion of his body. He was taken to Windsor Regional Hospital but died last Friday.

On Monday, investigators from the Major Crimes Branch arrested the 18-year-old and charged him with criminal negligence causing death. He is currently out on bail with a promise to appear in court at a later date.

Police remind residents that open-air burning is not allowed within the City of Windsor.
