Downtown Mission needs donations as pantry supplies dwindle

Windsor's Downtown Mission is putting an urgent call out to the public as food donations run low.

"Much of our donated food is received through the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays, as well as the spring months," said Laurie Musson, director of Downtown Mission food services. "In the summer, the businesses, unions, and schools that conduct food drivers are not as active due to summer activities and other events."

However, the number of people who seek help at the Mission's food bank remains the same.

It says 2,000 people a month use the food bank, a significant increase from earlier this year.

The Downtown Mission is looking for:

  • canned tuna, salmon, chicken, and ham
  •  peanut butter
  • canned fruits in their own juices or light syrup
  • pasta and whole wheat pasta
  • white rice and brown rice
  • macaroni and cheese
  • canned vegetables with low sodium or no salt added
  • soups including beef stew, chicken noodle, chilli, vegetable
  • pasta sauces
  • tea, instant coffee, and hot chocolate
  • sugar and sugar twin
  • spices
  • oxo cubes
  • salad dressing
Through its various programs, the Downtown Mission has served 346,357 meals.
