Strong winds prompt flood watch

The Essex Region Conservation Authority is keeping an eye on the waters of Lake Erie Friday.

A flood watch has been issued for the municipality of Leamington, from the outlet of Sturgeon Creek through the tip of Point Pelee National Park, plus the west and south shores of Pelee Island. Winds from the west and southwest, with sustained speeds of 25 to 40 kilometres per hour and gusts up to 70 kilometres per hour, are raising the likelihood of flooding along the shorelines in those areas.

Tim Byrne, ERCA's director of watershed management services, said water spray, wave overtopping and standing water may cause flooding. The ongoing wave activity has the potential to damage breakwalls that are already unmaintained or damaged. Erosion may be seen in nearshore areas as well as the toe protection for existing breakwalls.

A flood watch means flooding is possible on specific watercourses or municipalities. Landowners, municipalities and emergency services in flood-prone areas should take precautions.

ERCA said this advisory is in effect until 10 a.m. Saturday.
