Downtown Windsor theft foiled

Windsor police are giving an alert citizen credit for foiling a theft in the core of the city.

Officers arrested and charged a Windsor man Monday night after a citizen went into a store at Wyandotte Street and Goyeau Street to warn people that someone had just broken into a car. A suspect was found in the washroom of a nearby restaurant and officers recovered property belonging to the complainant.

Michael Pontich, 50, from Windsor is charged with theft and possession of stolen property.

Thefts from vehicles have been an ongoing problem in downtown Windsor and business owners have been saying that more officers need to patrol the core every night and not just on busy weekends.

Pontich was also charged with break and enter, theft and two counts of possession of stolen property in 2014.
