Detroit's Ilitch organization explores regional sports network idea

The Ilitch family will start exploring the idea of a regional sports network to showcase the Detroit Tigers and the Detroit Red Wings immediately.

"FOX Sports Detroit is a great partner, and we look forward to discussing renewal and extension possibilities," said Chris Granger, group president of sports and entertainment at Ilitch Holdings. "At the same time, we have two perennially highly-rated and historic franchises, which provide compelling year-round content and programming. As such, we feel our organization is uniquely positioned to explore the launch of what we believe could be a highly successful regional sports network."

The process will begin immediately, and there is no deadline for its completion.

"The creation of a new network would be a natural business extension for our organization," said Granger. "Live sports remain some of the most sought-after content on television and across digital platforms."

Other regional sports networks owned by sports properties include YES Network owned by Yankee Entertainment and Sports Network LLC, SNY owned by Sterling Entertainment Enterprises LLC, MASN which is a joint venture between the Baltimore Orioles and the Washington Nationals.

The Ilitch organization also represents Olympia Entertainment and has a joint venture interest in 313 Presents.
