Montreal massacre victims remembered in Windsor

December 6 is the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women.

Unifor Local 444 held a memorial ceremony Thursday morning just outside of the Windsor Assembly Plant to honour the 14 women who were killed in the 1989 L'Ecole Polytéchnique massacre. Unifor Local 444 also donated $2,000 to the Welcome Centre Shelter for Women in Windsor. The union also donated $2,000 to the House of Sophrosyne and donated $6,233 to Hiatus House earlier this week.

The University of Windsor will hold a vigil Thursday night at 6 to remember the 14 women and Lori Dupont, a Windsor nurse who was murdered at Hôtel-Dieu Grace Hospital in 2005. The candlelight vigil will be at the Memorial of Hope on campus located between Dillon Hall and Essex Hall.

“We are doing this to remember the victims of this tragedy, as well as all women who are victims of violence,” said Micaela Nimmo, coordinator of the women’s centre.
