SIU ends Windsor investigation

Ontario's law enforcement oversight agency has ended an investigation into an incident that saw a man injured while in Windsor police custody.

The incident took place in the early morning hours of December 7, 2018. A 36-year-old man was arrested in the area of University Avenue and Ouellette Avenue and charged with being intoxicated in a public place.

Officers handcuffed the man and took him to police headquarters. Once there, the suspect complained of a sore hand. He was taken by paramedics to a local hospital for treatment.

The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) was called in, but the subsequent investigation found no wrongdoing by Windsor police.

"The injury to the man’s hand occurred prior to his contact with the police. As such, I have terminated the investigation into this incident,” said SIU Director Tony Loparco.

The SIU is the oversight agency for law enforcement in Ontario. It is contacted whenever a police interaction includes a death, an injury, or an allegation of sexual assault.
