Emotional vigil held for missing & murdered women

Murdered and missing women in the Windsor-Detroit area were remembered with a march and vigil at the Windsor riverfront Thursday evening.

About 150 women rang a bell and said their names aloud. Names like Lori DuPont, Cassandra Kaake and Autumn Taggart. Dupont was killed at Hotel Dieu Grace Hospital by former boyfriend Doctor Marc Daniel in November of 2005, Kaake was murdered inside her home in December of 2014, and Taggart died after being strangled in her apartment in June of 2018.

"We are going to join with our sisters in Michigan in unity. This vigil of light and love is not about anything else tonight. It's not about any of us," said Michelle Mainwaring, one of the organizers.

The women held a joint vigil with their counterparts in Detroit, who were across the river from Festival Plaza shining their lights back at Windsor.

Mainwaring said the march and vigil honours all the women lost over the years.

"We're going to display or lights across the river. First I'm going to ring the bell and then say her name. Please say the name of the woman you're here to represent," she said.

Mainwaring said the march and vigil are meant to show unity.

"Exchange lights with our sisters and our friends and neighbours across the river," Mainwaring added.
