Windsor police complaints decline slightly

Police complaints in Windsor were slightly down in 2018.

A report presented to the Windsor Police Services Board showed that there were 66 public complains in 2017 but that number dropped slightly to 64 in 2018. Data showed that 57 of those were for police conduct. That's nine more than 2017 when there were 48 public complaints for police conduct. Police said 19 public complaints last year were frivolous, six were withdrawn, another six were resolved, and four were unsubstantiated. The report showed that 17 files are still open.

The use of force report for 2018 is expected to be presented at the board meeting next month. It shows how many times tasers and firearms are drawn, and used by officers.

The Windsor Police Service is also still under investigation by the Ontario Civilian Police Commission over complaints about unfair promotion practices, nepotism, interference in legal proceedings, and allowing a toxic workplace to flourish. The complaints were made between January 2018 and April 2018.
