EnWin Utilities is asking consumers to keep a close eye out for potential door-to-door scammers.
The utility said they received at least two complaints from customers since Thursday morning concerning a person who claimed to be an EnWin employee. The individual told the customers that he needed access to their home to change their thermostats.
EnWin spokesperson Barbara Peirce Marshall said the utility does not send employees door-to-door to change thermostats, ask for payment, or sell service contracts and products. However, on rare occasions when a personal visit is required, EnWin will try to notify the customer in advance by mail, phone or both.
Marshall said scammers will develop elaborate schemes to fool consumers and provide very convincing stories. Here are some additional tips provided by EnWin for customers to keep the upper hand against potential crooks:
- If you have doubt as to whether someone claiming to be an EnWin employee is legit, ask for ID. If in doubt, call EnWin at (519) 255-2727 to verify if an employee has been sent to your home. Legitimate employees will have no problem showing ID or allowing verification.
- If you ask a visitor to leave, they must do so immediately.
- It's your home. You're in charge. Do not allow anyone into your home unless you've contacted them yourself or can verify who they are.
- Never provide your utility bills or personal information to a stranger unless you've called EnWin yourself or can confirm the person's identity.
- If you feel threatened or unsafe, or if you think you've been scammed, contact your local police department immediately or call 911.
