The veteran hockey announcer who has called many memorable moments in Windsor Spitfires history is calling it a career.
Mike Miller, who has served as the radio play-by-play announcer for the team for the past 11 seasons, announced this week that he will be retiring from the broadcast booth at the end of the current season. According to the Spitfires, Miller is shutting off his microphone due to a voice and vocal disorder that he said affected his ability to call games at a high-quality level.
Miller was hired to call Spitfires games before the 2008-2009 season. He has called over 800 regular-season and post-season contests, including three Memorial Cups and two Ontario Hockey League titles.
From Toledo, Ohio, Miller has worked in hockey for over 30 years in various capacities, and he also has the distinction of calling an NHL team's games during Stanley Cup championship seasons. Miller handled play-by-play for the New Jersey Devils from 1993 to 2002, calling their Cup-winning teams in 1995 and 2000.
After leaving the Devils, Miller became general manager of the now-defunct Toledo Storm in the East Coast Hockey League, during which time they won an ECHL regular-season title and two division championships. Before joining the Spitfires in the radio booth, he also worked in the front office of the NHL's Columbus Blue Jackets and the former Chicago Hounds of the IHL.
The Spitfires plan to honour Miller during its game against the Kingston Frontenacs Sunday afternoon at the WFCU Centre.
