The Windsor-Essex County Health Unit is urging those under 25-years about the risks of using cannabis.
The health unit is launching a new education campaign ahead of April 20, or 4-20, a day cannabis enthusiasts traditionally used to lobby for an end to prohibition.
Now that the prohibition is over, and the first legal pot stores are opening in Ontario, health officials are promoting awareness through the use of advertising on bus shelters, buses, in movie theatres, on social media, and at the campuses of the University of Windsor and St. Clair College.
"It's important for young adults to know that starting cannabis use early and using it heavily can lead to long-term or permanent damage to brain function, including memory, learning, and judgement as well as an increased risk of dependence or the development of mental illness," said Health Promotion Specialist at the health unit Melissa Valentik.
She also urged those who are pregnant or breastfeeding, and those with a history of mental illness to avoid cannabis.
"There remain a lot of questions and very few sources for accurate and credible information on the negative health effects and safer ways to consume this newly legal product," Valentik added.
The Cannabis: Your Questions, Answered campaign urges young people to delay use until after the brain is fully developed at the age of 25. For those over that age, it advises limiting consumption to once a week, choosing lower THC products, and avoiding use with alcohol or tobacco.
