Reckless ride across Essex County ends in serious charges

Several charges have been laid against a Windsor man after a spree of vehicle thefts and crashes throughout Essex County.

Leo Compton, 38, of Windsor, is accused of crashing his vehicle on Essex County Road 20 in Harrow Thursday morning, stealing another vehicle from a man who stopped to help at the collision and driving off.

The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) said they got information that one of the vehicles involved in the crash was stolen and believed to be involved in other criminal incidents earlier that morning.

The suspect and the stolen vehicle were allegedly seen entering Highway 401 at Manning Road an hour later with the vehicle missing a tire and riding on the rim. Officers stopped the driver on County Road 46 in Lakeshore but he struck a police cruiser before allegedly running away.

Compton is charged with dangerous driving, robbery, fleeing from police, and uttering death threats.

No injuries were reported.

The investigation continues.
