Lakeshore OPP to help flooded residents fill sandbags

The Ontario Provincial Police Auxiliary Unit and Lakeshore OPP Community Policing Committee want to help flooded residents who may not be able to fill sandbags on their own.

The Town of Lakeshore has started a program where residents can go to four designated areas to fill sandbags, and the OPP will be there to help.

A release from the town said it knows some residents, including the elderly, may not be physically capable of filling the bags.

On Wednesday, residents can go to Lions Park on Melody Drive in Lighthouse Cove, the former Belle River Arena on Rourke Line, the Lakeshore Public Works yard on Puce Road, or the Golfview Drive Parkette on Golfview Drive. Essex County OPP Auxiliary members will be there from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Residents can still get sandbags at the Atlas Tube Centre and the Lions Park in Lighthouse Cove.

Residents will be limited to 100 bags each and will have to show proof of residency, like a bill.

Many residents living along the shores of Lake St. Clair, the Detroit River, and Lake Erie have experienced flooding this summer because of record high water levels.
