UPDATE: Search suspended for person spotted swimming in Detroit River

Emergency crews on both sides of the border have suspended a search for a person who was seen swimming in the Detroit River.

The Windsor Police Service received multiple reports Friday evening at around 6 p.m. after several people spotted the swimmer in the area of 9200 Riverside Drive East in Windsor.  As a result, the Windsor Police Service, the Canadian and U.S. Coast Guards and the Detroit Police Department began a search of the water for the swimmer. A Coast Guard helicopter also assisted with the search.

The search was called off just after 9 p.m. due to the weather, police said.  It is unknown if the search will resume Saturday morning.

Anyone with information regarding this swimmer is asked to contact police immediately.
