Candidates in next year's U.S. presidential election are debating the issues, and each other, this week in the Motor City.
The Democratic hopefuls for the highest office in the country have gathered in Detroit for a pair of debates. The first took place Tuesday night, and the second is set for Wednesday night at 8 p.m. at the Fox Theatre. CNN is moderating and broadcasting the debates.
There is a total of 20 candidates vying for the Democratic presidential nomination. Due to the size of the field, half debated Tuesday, and the other half Wednesday.
Detroit has historically been a stronghold for the Democratic Party, with Democrats completely representing the city in both Washington, and the state level in Lansing. Interestingly, Detroit has never hosted a Democratic National Convention, though it did host the Republicans in 1980.
Each candidate has the same objective, which is to take the White House back from President Donald Trump next November. They will discuss a variety of issues that include the economy, climate change, immigration, education, health care and gun control.
Primary frontrunner Joe Biden, former U.S. Vice-President, is scheduled to participate Wednesday night. Other candidates include New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio, New York Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, California Senator Kamala Harris and Julian Castro, former secretary of the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).
